Formica cinerea – Sand ant
Formica cinerea is a robust and very active ant species found in large parts of Europe, including the Netherlands. This species lives primarily in open, dry areas such as sandy soils, dunes, and heathlands. Due to their rapid movements and strong sense of orientation, they are true hunters and efficient foragers.
Worker bees of Formica cinerea are almost continuously active and are known for their speed and alertness. They actively hunt small insects and explore large areas around the nest. In a formicarium, they are therefore constantly visible in the arena, which makes this species particularly interesting to keep.
The colony grows relatively quickly and can eventually develop into a large and strong colony. As a result, this species is slightly less suitable for complete beginners, but very interesting for keepers looking for an active and dynamic ant species.
