Ask people what pet they'd like to have, and you rarely hear ants mentioned. Yet, the number of people who keep ants is growing. More and more people have an outdoor ant enclosure and are starting their own ant colonies. It makes perfect sense. Keeping ants takes very little time, and anyone can learn from these small, hardworking creatures.
The most important ant is and remains the ant queen
While an outdoor ant colony is very attractive, especially for the ants themselves, it's the most important element when starting your own ant colony. That's, and always will be, the queen ant. She lays eggs, which eventually give birth to worker ants. These workers also ensure the colony always has a sufficient supply of food in the ant colony. The workers are busy all day long. Unlike a dog, you don't really need to keep them occupied.
