Shelfordella lateralis, often called Blatta lateralis or Redrunners, are rich in protein and have a soft chitinous shell. Available in sizes ranging from 4 to 35 millimeters, they offer a suitable size for every insectivore. They are popular food for ants, but especially for reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods.
These cockroaches are often chosen because they have a longer lifespan than other prey animals, they cannot climb on smooth surfaces like glass or plastic, they do not burrow, and they are very active, making them very attractive prey.
They have a much higher nutritional value than, for example, fruit flies, grasshoppers, or crickets.
Redrunners can be stored around room temperature and fed with some vegetables.
