Nesting

More and more people are deciding to keep their own ant colony. Logical, because ants have always been very fascinating animals and they still are. If you want to work on a growing ant colony, you must always ensure that the conditions are optimal. Of course, these conditions also include the best nests. And nests come in quite a few different designs and materials.

Interesting, keeping ants

It is extremely interesting to start keeping ants. It is fascinating to watch the ants at work. In nature, ants usually build nests on the ground, in trees between rock crevices or with the help of leaves. Initially, you can usually get by just fine with a test tube. However, this can result in a colony consisting of about thirty ants. If the colony grows larger, you should really start looking into nests for ants.

Nests with already ready-made corridors and rooms

As stated, nests are made of different materials. It is therefore possible to opt for a plaster nest. This nest is cast with plaster and the nest already has the necessary corridors and rooms. The ants no longer have to work on rooms and corridors themselves. It is wise to cover these nests with paper or cardboard. Ants simply like to be in the dark.

Do you choose nests made of sand, plaster or glass?

You also have nests that can easily be described as sand farms. You then imitate nature. Now the ants have to make their own corridors and chambers. Typically, such a nest consists of two different plates with about a centimeter of sand between them. Our range also includes a nice range of glass nests. Of course, glass is the perfect material to keep a close eye on your colony. Glass is a very safe material for a nest. However, when the ants experience stress, they can decide to cover the glass walls with grains of sand, thus blocking your view. Ants especially do this when they feel stressed and have the feeling that they are being observed. On the other hand, glass nests are very safe because there is no way for ants to create an opening in this nest. Investigate nests before deciding to keep an ant colony. Which nest best suits your situation depends, among other things, on which ant species you decide to purchase. Are you stuck? Then ask one of our specialists for advice.
