Nests

More and more people are deciding to start their own ant colonies. It makes sense, because ants have always been, and still are, fascinating creatures. If you want to work on a growing ant colony, you must always ensure optimal conditions. Naturally, these conditions also include the best nests. And nests come in quite a few different designs and materials.

Interesting, keeping ants

Keeping ants is incredibly interesting. It's fascinating to watch them at work. In nature, ants typically build nests on the ground, in trees, between rock crevices, or using leaves. Initially, a test tube is usually sufficient. However, this can be done up to a colony of about thirty ants. If the colony grows larger, you'll really need to delve into ant nests.

Nests with already ready-made corridors and rooms

As mentioned, nests come in various materials. For example, you can choose a plaster nest. This nest is cast with plaster and already has the necessary tunnels and chambers. The ants don't have to create their own tunnels and chambers. It's wise to cover these nests with paper or cardboard. Ants simply prefer the dark.

Do you choose nests made of sand, plaster or glass?

There are also nests that can easily be described as sand farms. They mimic nature, but the ants have to build their own tunnels and chambers. Typically, such a nest consists of two separate plates with about a centimeter of sand between them. We also offer a nice selection of glass nests. Glass is, of course, the perfect material for continuously observing your colony. Glass is a very safe material for a nest. However, if ants experience stress, they can decide to line the glass walls with grains of sand, thus blocking your view. Ants do this especially when they feel stressed and are being observed. On the other hand, glass nests are very safe because ants have no way to break into them. Research nests before deciding to keep an ant colony. The best nest for your situation depends, among other things, on the ant species you decide to purchase. Still having trouble? Ask one of our specialists for advice.
