Tetramorium bicarinatum is a species in the Myrmicinae subfamily. It's a colorful and active ant species that will grow increasingly rapidly. Once this species grows to more than 2,000 workers, it will begin producing fertilized queens, allowing them to form extremely large colonies that can grow incredibly quickly. This species is also somewhat invasive and can cause a plague if it escapes. Therefore, we recommend a good formicarium (enclosure) from our webshop. This is definitely not a species for beginners!

Buy Tetramorium bicarinatum

If you decide to buy Tetramorium bicarinatum, you're not making things easy for yourself. It's not surprising that this ant species is not recommended for beginners. In that respect, it's comparable to buying Crematogaster scutellaris, which is also not an easy colony to manage.

The ants do not hibernate and are active all year round

Buying the Tetramorium bicarinatum means you're getting an ant that lives in both Europe and Asia. The ant is notable for its very small size; the queen, for example, doesn't even grow larger than 4 or 5 millimeters. The worker ant is not much smaller in this case, reaching a length between 3 and 5 millimeters. Buying the Tetramorium bicarinatum does mean you'll be dealing with ants that don't hibernate. These ants are therefore exceptionally active year-round.

Choose a nest made of ytong, acrylic or plaster

Looking for a suitable nest for your Tetramorium bicarinatum? Choose from a nest made of ytong, acrylic, or plaster. As for feeding them, you can do these ants a favor by providing them with insects, sugar water, and honeydew. These ants are strikingly colorful and very active. The colonies grow increasingly rapidly. Once there are more than two thousand workers, they begin fertilizing queens. This allows for the formation of extremely large colonies that can also grow incredibly quickly.

Buy Tetramorium bicarinatum: the ants can easily cause a plague if they escape

These ants are mildly invasive. If they escape, you'll be in for a real ant infestation. A good habitat is essential for this reason. Don't give them the chance to escape. For this reason, it's not wise to choose this particular ant species as a beginner. It's better to choose a different ant species, one that's less likely to escape and grows more slowly. However, for the experienced ant, this ant species presents a nice challenge. It's fascinating to see how quickly the colonies grow, provided you provide the perfect conditions, of course. And an experienced ant can do that! And then you'll have a lot of fun with these active ants.
