Lasius flavus is a species in the Formicinae subfamily.
It's a species you're much less likely to encounter in nature than Lasius niger, though they are almost equally common. These ants live primarily underground and in meadows, so you're less likely to encounter them. They're bright yellow/orange, which makes them very attractive, but this species is less active than most others. We also recommend feeding a small colony in the tube.

Buy Lasius flavus

Buying the Lasius flavus? You'll be buying a truly unique ant species. You don't see them often in the wild, but they do exist. Their colors are particularly eye-catching. That alone makes buying the Lasius flavus a very interesting proposition.

The European ant is a bit on the small side

Buying the Lasius flavus is like buying a European ant. The queen is somewhat small, measuring between 7 and 9 millimeters long. There are no soldiers, but the workers grow to between 3 and 5 millimeters in length. The ants hibernate from December to March, ideally at a temperature between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. They thrive in temperatures between 17 and 28 degrees Celsius, and the ideal temperature is around 23 and 26 degrees Celsius. If you decide to buy the Lasius flavus, there are several nest types available. You can choose a ytong nest or a plaster nest. It's also an easy ant species to feed. You can do them a favor by feeding them insects, sugar, water, and honey.

The bright yellow color or the beautiful orange color is striking

Buying a Lasius flavus ant means you're buying a subfamily of the Formicinae. Many people won't immediately recognize this ant species. You rarely encounter them in the wild, even though there are at least as many as other ant species. The fact that you rarely see them is mainly due to the fact that the ants live primarily underground, making this species much less common. As mentioned, the color is striking, to say the least. It's bright yellow or orange, making it a striking and very attractive ant. Once you've seen the Lasius flavus ant, you'll be instantly hooked.

Buy the Lasius flavus: you buy a somewhat calmer ant species in striking colours

When you buy Lasius flavus, you're buying an ant species that's significantly less active than you might be used to. This makes it a perfect species to keep in a small colony in a van. Buying Lasius flavus is quite different from buying, for example, Messor wasmanni. The ants are incomparable, if only because of their appearance!
