Buying an Atta mexicana colony means you're bringing an ant into your home that originates from Mexico and Arizona (USA). However, you're primarily bringing an ant into your home that can grow very large and for whom stability is crucial. Buying an Atta mexicana colony can be an alternative to buying an Acromyrmex octospinosus colony. Both ants have similarities, especially in the space they ultimately occupy. Don't be mistaken, Atta mexicana colonies can grow to several million workers and several liters of mold, so keep this in mind!
By buying an Atta Mexicana colony, you're acquiring a giant ant. The queen, for example, can easily reach 29 millimeters. Of course, the worker ant colonies are considerably smaller, measuring between 3 and 16 millimeters. The soldiers, however, are also quite large, measuring between 18 and 23 millimeters. You'll enjoy this ant species year-round. Unlike many other ant species, they don't hibernate.
If you choose to buy an Atta Mexicana colony, you'll also need to buy a cylinder nest. Ants thrive in these. Ants also thrive in temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius. Ideally, the temperature should be kept at a constant 26 degrees Celsius. Also, pay particular attention to humidity, which ideally should be between 95 and 99 percent.
If you decide to buy an Atta Mexicana colony, be aware that the ant needs a very stable temperature and humidity. If you manage that, you'll have a special and beautiful ant species at your disposal. This ant is also considered a fungus cultivator. The ant processes various types of leaves and then feeds them to the fungi. The ant is a true leaf cutter. In the wild, the ant is accustomed to an extremely constant temperature. To monitor the temperature accurately, measure it at the location where the fungus is located. Avoid measuring the temperature in the enclosure, as you'll never get accurate readings.
It's therefore crucial to always maintain a constant temperature and, above all, monitor the humidity. It's essential for keeping this ant species. This makes it a challenge for the more experienced ant keeper. Beginners are not advised to choose this ant.
