Polyrhachis armata – Armored spiny ant
Polyrhachis armata is a striking tropical ant species that is immediately recognizable by its robust build and characteristic spines. As with many species within the genus Polyrhachis, the spines give the worker ants a distinctive and almost armored appearance. Combined with their relatively large size, this makes Polyrhachis armata an impressive species to observe in a formicarium.
The species occurs in parts of Southeast Asia and lives in warm, tropical conditions. Workers are active foragers and regularly leave the nest to search for sweet food sources and insects. As soon as food is found, activity around the food source clearly increases.
Polyrhachis armata belongs to the Formicinae. As a result, the species does not possess a functional stinger like many Myrmicinae, but can defend itself in other ways. Its striking appearance, body spines, and active foraging behavior make this species particularly interesting for enthusiasts who wish to keep a unique tropical Polyrhachis.
Because it is a tropical species, no cold winter dormancy is necessary. With sufficient warmth, the colony can remain active throughout the year.

Scientific name: Polyrhachis armata
Dutch name: Armored spiny ant

Ant color: Dark brown to black, depending on the individual and light conditions
Difficulty level: 3 / 5
Queen size: approximately 11 – 14 mm
Worker size: approximately 7 – 10 mm
Soldier size: Not present
Temperature: approximately 24 – 30°C
Optimal temperature: approximately 26 – 28°C
Holidaying: No wintering necessary
Growth rate: Average
Maximum queen lifespan: several years under good conditions
Maximum worker lifespan: approximately 1 – 2 years, depending on conditions
Development to worker numbers: several hundred to possibly more than 1,000 workers under good conditions
Subfamily: Formicinae
Structure: Claustral; the queen can raise the first generation of workers from her own reserves
Colony formation: Primarily monogynous, with one queen per colony
Power supply
Polyrhachis armata is an omnivorous ant species that requires both carbohydrates and animal proteins.
Diet: insects such as redrunners, crickets, mealworms, buffalo worms, dubia cockroaches, and fruit flies.
Sugars: for example Byformica Sunburst Ant Nectar, sugar water, honey water and other suitable nectar food.
Sugar-rich food forms an important energy source for the active worker bees. Protein-rich insects are especially important when larvae are present and the colony is growing.
With a larger colony, the amount of insects offered can be gradually increased. Remove uneaten food scraps promptly to prevent mold and mites.
Fresh drinking water must always be available.
Care
Due to its tropical origin, Polyrhachis armata requires a warm environment. A portion of the enclosure can be heated so that the ants can choose between warmer and cooler zones.
The nest can be kept slightly to moderately moist. Ensure a moisture gradient and prevent the entire nest from being constantly wet. Good ventilation is important, especially when humidity is kept higher.
Polyrhachis species are excellent climbers. Reliable escape protection around the arena is therefore important.
From how many workers to a nest: approximately 20 – 30 workers
Recommended nest type: Polyrhachis formicarium, 3D nest, cork or wood nest, Ytong nest, or a naturally decorated tropical formicarium
An enclosure with sufficient climbing surface, branches, and a spacious arena makes it possible to closely observe natural foraging behavior.
