Fruit flies – ideal food for ants

Fruit flies are an excellent food source for small to medium-sized ant colonies and are particularly suitable for species that like to hunt small prey. Due to their small size, even young colonies can easily handle the fruit flies and take them back to the nest.

Fruit flies are a good source of animal protein. These proteins are important for the development of the brood and support the growth of the colony. Regularly offering insects is especially recommended when a colony has many larvae.

Suitable for many ant species

Fruit flies can be fed to many different ant species. They are particularly suitable for smaller species and young colonies for which larger feeder insects, such as cockroaches or mealworms, are still too large.

How do you feed the fruit flies?

The fruit flies can be offered directly to the ants. For easy feeding, we recommend storing the fruit flies frozen. You can then simply take the desired amount from the freezer, let it thaw briefly, and offer it to the colony.

Feed only as much as the colony can consume within a short time and remove uneaten leftovers to keep the outside world clean.

Store in the freezer

We recommend storing the fruit flies in the freezer. This makes them easy to dose, allows for longer storage, and ensures you always have feeder insects immediately available for your ant colonies.

Fruit flies and mites

When keeping and breeding live fruit flies, mites can develop or be introduced over time. This occurs in feeder insect breeding and can develop rapidly under favorable conditions. By storing the fruit flies in the freezer upon receipt, you reduce the chance that any mites present can multiply further.

For this reason, we recommend not keeping fruit flies alive for extended periods when they are used exclusively as food for ants.

Packaging

The fruit flies are supplied in suitable packaging and are available in various quantities. This allows you to easily choose a quantity that suits the size of your ant colony.

Please note: the fruit flies are shipped alive, but as they are live feeder insects, it is possible that some may die during transport. For the best and longest preservation, we recommend placing the fruit flies in the freezer as soon as possible upon receipt.
