Description

Camponotus micans – Mediterranean giant ant

Camponotus micans is a medium to large Camponotus species found in the Mediterranean region and adjacent areas. The species is predominantly dark in color and is notable for its robust build and distinct differences between small workers and larger majors. As a result, the appearance of the colony changes visibly as it develops.

In the wild, Camponotus micans is primarily found in warm, relatively dry, and open habitats. The colonies nest mainly in the soil and can be found, for example, under stones or in sheltered places. Contrary to what the name 'wood ant' sometimes suggests, this Camponotus is therefore not exclusively dependent on wood as a nesting site.

The workers collect both sweet food sources and animal proteins. As with many Camponotus species, a young colony initially develops relatively quietly. As the number of workers increases, larger workers and majors appear, and activity in the arena becomes significantly higher.

Due to its size, slow development, and polymorphism, Camponotus micans is interesting for enthusiasts seeking an easily observable Mediterranean Camponotus species.

Specifications

Scientific name: Camponotus micans
Dutch name: Mediterranean giant ant
Distribution area: Mediterranean region and adjacent parts of Southern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia
Ant color: Predominantly dark brown to black, sometimes with brownish tints on legs and body parts
Difficulty level: 2 / 5
Queen size: approximately 12 – 15 mm
Worker size: approximately 5 – 10 mm
Soldier / major size: approximately 10 – 13 mm, with a distinctly larger and broader head
Temperature: approximately 20 – 28°C
Optimal temperature: approximately 24 – 27°C
Hilly dormancy: Yes, in Mediterranean populations approximately November through February at around 10 – 15°C
Growth rate: Slow to average; Young colonies generally develop more quietly than larger, established colonies.
Maximum lifespan of queen: approximately 15–20 years under good conditions.
Maximum lifespan of workers: approximately 1–3 years.
Growth to worker numbers: several thousand workers possible
Subfamily: Formicinae
Founding: Claustral; the queen can raise the first generation of workers from her own body reserves.
Colony formation: Monogyn, normally one queen per colony.

Power supply

Camponotus micans is an omnivorous ant species that requires both carbohydrate-rich food and animal protein.

Diet: insects such as redrunners, crickets, mealworms, buffalo worms, dubia cockroaches, and fruit flies.

Sugars: for example Byformica Sunburst Ant Nectar, sugar water, honey water, honeydew and other suitable nectar foods.

Sugar-rich food is an important energy source for the adult worker bees. Protein-rich insects are particularly important for the development of the larvae and thus for the growth of the colony.

Fresh drinking water must always be available.

Care

Camponotus micans is best kept in a predominantly dry to slightly damp nest. Provide a humidity gradient where part of the nest is more humid for the brood and other chambers remain drier.

For proper development, a portion of the nest can be heated. Preferably, do not heat the entire nest, so that the ants can choose between warmer and cooler zones themselves.

From how many workers to a nest: approximately 20 – 30 workers

Recommended nest type: 3D nest, Ytong nest, plaster nest or acrylic nest

Due to the relatively large size, both the workers and the brood are easy to observe. As the colony grows, the differences between minors, media, and majors become increasingly visible.

✅ Why choose Camponotus micans

• Large and easily observable ant species
• Beautiful dark coloration
• Clear polymorphism with minors, media, and majors
• Impressive majors with broad heads
• Calm and orderly development
• Interesting foraging behavior
• Suitable for beginners with some preparation and advanced
• Interesting Mediterranean Camponotus species
