Description

Pheidole indica – Asian dwarf ant

Pheidole indica is a small, active, and fast-growing ant species native to Asia. Due to human dispersal, the species has since been found in other warm regions of the world. Pheidole indica is particularly interesting because of the distinct difference between the small workers and the striking majors, which have a much larger head and powerful mandibles.

Despite their small size, colonies can be particularly active. As soon as a food source is discovered, multiple workers can be quickly recruited. Especially in insects, it is easy to see how workers cooperate and how the larger majors are deployed to process and defend food.

An established colony can grow rapidly under warm conditions. As a result, a lively colony develops relatively quickly, in which continuous activity can be seen. Due to the combination of small workers, striking majors, and a strong feeding response, Pheidole indica is an interesting strain for enthusiasts who like to see a lot of activity in the arena.

Due to the very small size of the workers and the growth rate, this species requires a well-sealed formicarium and reliable escape protection.

Specifications

Scientific name: Pheidole indica
Dutch name: Asian dwarf ant
Distribution area: Originally Asia; nowadays, due to introduction, also present in various tropical and subtropical areas outside the original distribution area
Ant color: Yellowish-brown to reddish-brown; color can vary between workers and colonies
Difficulty level: 2 / 5
Queen size: approximately 6 – 8 mm
Worker size: approximately 2 – 3 mm
Soldier / major size: approximately 3 – 4.5 mm, with a conspicuously large head and powerful mandibles
Temperature: approximately 22 – 30°C
Optimal temperature: approximately 25 – 28°C
Winter dormancy: No true winter dormancy necessary for colonies kept in tropical/subtropical environments; the exact seasonal rhythm may depend on the origin of the colony
Growth rate: Fast
Maximum queen lifespan: several years under good conditions
Maximum worker lifespan: usually a few months to about a year
Development to worker numbers: several thousand workers; well-developed colonies can become large
Subfamily: Myrmicinae
Organization: Claustral; The queen can raise the first generation of workers from her own reserves.
Colony formation: Multiple queens can occur in this species; the colony structure can depend on population and origin.

Power supply

Pheidole indica is an omnivorous ant species with a strong need for both proteins and carbohydrates.

Diet: small insects such as fruit flies, small redrunners, small crickets, buffalo worms, and pieces of mealworm or dubia.

Sugars: for example Byformica Sunburst Ant Nectar, sugar water, honey water and other suitable nectar food.

Proteins are particularly important when many larvae are present. A well-fed colony can produce a large amount of brood and grow rapidly. In larger colonies, the response to insects can be very impressive because many worker bees move to the food simultaneously.

Fresh drinking water must always be available.

Care

Pheidole indica thrives in a warm environment. The nest can be kept slightly moist, but ensure a moisture gradient so that the colony can choose where to place the brood.

Due to the very small size of the worker ants, good escape protection is essential. Small gaps that pose no problem for larger ant species can be large enough for Pheidole indica to escape through. Therefore, carefully check connections, vents, and hose connections.

From how many workers to a nest: approximately 30 – 50 workers

Recommended nest type: finely finished 3D nest, small Ytong nest, plaster nest or well-sealed acrylic nest

As the colony grows, sufficient space must be available in the arena. Due to their rapid food response and large numbers, adult colonies can become particularly active.

✅ Why choose Pheidole indica

• Small but very active ant species
• Striking majors with large heads
• Clear distinction between minors and majors
• Rapid colony growth under good conditions
• Strong and interesting feeding response
• High activity in the arena
• No cold European dormancy required with tropical/subtropical origin
• Interesting for keepers seeking a dynamic Pheidole species
