Description

Monomorium subopacum – Mediterranean dwarf ant

Monomorium subopacum is a very small, active ant species that occurs naturally around the Mediterranean region, North Africa, parts of the Middle East, and Atlantic islands such as Madeira. The species lives primarily in warm, dry, and sunny areas and can be found both in natural habitats and in the vicinity of human settlements.

Despite their small size, colonies of Monomorium subopacum can become particularly active. Workers forage extensively and can quickly recruit other workers to a found food source. Especially near insects and other protein-rich food sources, large numbers of workers can appear in a short time.

A distinctive feature of Monomorium subopacum is colony formation. The species is polygynous, meaning that multiple queens can live and lay eggs within the same colony. As a result, a well-established colony can grow rapidly and eventually consist of very large numbers of worker bees.

Due to the combination of very small workers, multiple queens, and rapid colony growth, excellent escape protection is necessary. This species is therefore particularly suitable for keepers who have experience with small, fast-growing ant species.

Specifications

Scientific name: Monomorium subopacum
Dutch name: Mediterranean dwarf ant
Distribution area: Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, North Africa, parts of the Middle East and Atlantic islands
Ant color: Brown to reddish-brown with a dark brown to black abdomen; queens are generally darker
Difficulty level: 3 / 5
Queen size: approximately 4 – 5 mm
Worker size: approximately 2 – 2.5 mm
Soldier size: Not present
Temperature: approximately 22 – 30°C
Optimal temperature: approximately 25 – 28°C
Hintership: No true hibernation necessary
Growth rate: Fast, especially in colonies with multiple queens
Maximum queen lifespan: several years under good conditions
Maximum worker lifespan: dependent on temperature, nutrition, and conditions
Development into worker numbers: thousands of workers; colony size is highly dependent on the number of queens and available space
Subfamily: Myrmicinae
Foundation: New queens can independently found a colony; In established colonies, expansion can also occur from colonies with multiple queens.
Colony formation: Polygyn, multiple queens can live together in one colony.

Power supply

Monomorium subopacum is an omnivorous ant species that requires both carbohydrates and animal proteins.

Diet: small insects such as fruit flies, small redrunners, small crickets, buffalo worms, and small pieces of mealworm or dubia.

Sugars: for example Byformica Sunburst Ant Nectar, sugar water, honey water and other suitable nectar food.

Due to the small size of the worker bees, it is advisable to offer larger feeder insects in small pieces. As the colony grows, the amount of protein-rich food can be significantly increased.

Fresh drinking water must always be available.

Care

Monomorium subopacum is adapted to relatively warm and dry conditions. In nature, nests are found under stones, among rocky material, and in dry ground cover. Therefore, the nest does not need to be kept completely moist.

A small damp zone or reliable water source is sufficient, while other parts of the nest may remain drier. A clear moisture gradient allows the colony to choose the most suitable place for breeding itself.

Number of workers per nest: approximately 30 – 50 workers; due to their very small size, a young colony can be kept compact for a long time.

Recommended nest type: finely finished 3D nest, Ytong nest, gypsum nest or fully enclosed acrylic nest.

Due to the worker bee size of only a few millimeters, very good escape protection is essential. Carefully check vents, hose connections, covers, and other connections for small gaps. In a polygynous colony, the population can increase rapidly, making sufficient expansion options important.

✅ Why choose Monomorium subopacum

• Very small and active ant species
• Polygynous: multiple queens per colony possible
• Rapid colony growth under good conditions
• Strong response to food
• Interesting recruitment and foraging behavior
• No cold winter dormancy necessary
• Can grow into a very large colony
• Interesting for enthusiasts of small, dynamic ant species
