Lasius niger – Black garden ant
Lasius niger is one of the best-known and most common ant species in Europe. In the Netherlands and Belgium, this species can be found virtually everywhere, from gardens and lawns to sidewalks, parks, and urban areas. The species is particularly successful because it can adapt well to diverse conditions.
Lasius niger worker ants are active, curious, and strong foragers. When a good food source is discovered, workers can lay a scent trail that quickly leads more ants to the same spot. This mass foraging behavior makes a larger colony very enjoyable to observe in a formicarium.
Due to its robust nature, easy care, and clear colony development, Lasius niger is one of the best ant species for novice ant keepers. An established colony can eventually grow to several thousand worker ants.

Foundation: Claustral, the queen raises the first workers without being fed during founding
Colony formation: Monogyne, normally one functional queen per mature colony
Power supply
Lasius niger is an omnivorous ant species that requires both sugar-rich food and protein for the healthy development of the colony.
Diet: small insects such as fruit flies, buffalo worms, mealworms, redrunners, and small crickets.
Sugars: for example sugar water, honey water, Nectra, Byformica Sunburst Ant Nectar, honeydew and beetle jelly.
Sugars primarily provide energy to the worker bees. Protein-rich insects are particularly important for the growth and development of the larvae and the rest of the brood.
Care
Lasius niger is a strong and forgiving ant species. In the wild, this species nests primarily in the soil, under stones, along paving, and in other sheltered places.
A slightly to moderately damp nest with a clear moisture gradient works well. Ensure that part of the nest remains sufficiently damp for breeding, while other chambers may be drier.
From how many workers to a nest: approximately 30 – 50 workers
Recommended nest type: 3D nest, Ytong nest, plaster nest, acrylic nest or sand/loam nest.
Because Lasius niger has relatively small workers, good escape protection is important. As the colony grows, activity in the arena increases sharply, and more and more foraging workers become visible.
✅ Why choose Lasius niger
• Very suitable as a first ant species
• Strong and easy-to-care-for colony
• Active and distinct foraging behavior
• Native species also found in the Netherlands
• Can grow to several thousand workers
• Interesting to follow the full development from queen to large colony
