Camponotus aethiops is an impressive, completely dark-colored Camponotus species from the Mediterranean region and adjacent parts of Europe and Asia. The species is notable for its black to reddish-black body, large queen, and distinct differences between small workers and large majors. Due to the size of the ants and their calm, purposeful behavior, this species is excellent for observation in a formicarium.
In the wild, Camponotus aethiops is primarily found in warm and relatively dry areas. Colonies nest mainly in the soil, often under stones and in sunny locations. The workers actively forage for sweet food sources and insects and, in larger colonies, can be observed increasingly often in the arena.
As with many Camponotus species, a young colony initially grows relatively slowly. As more workers arrive, development accelerates, and larger workers appear, eventually followed by impressive majors with broader heads. Consequently, the appearance of the colony changes distinctly during growth.
